What is a good and free virus / proofreader and adware removal program?

Where can I get something that will look in search of virus and adware and remove them? Im looking for something that people have actually tried because I had bad luck with the download of so-called "virus" before. Or add the virus instead of discarding them, or they say to be free, find 500,000 viruses, and then I have to pay a lot of money to dispose of them. Thus that what is a legitimate site that will find and delete them, for free, without adding virus / adware to my computer?
